Visiting Lecture by Prof. Jonathan Manton

Prof. Jonathan Manton, Professor, Department of Information Engineering, Research School of Information Sciences and Engineering (RSISE) at the Australian National University. He was the Executive Director, Mathematics, Information and Communication Sciencesthe at the Australian Research Council. He delivered talks on " How does Nature compute and how should we?" and " Optimisation on Manifolds".

Visiting Lecture Dr. Sid Chau

Dr. Sid Chau received a Ph.D. from University of Cambridge and is currently a Croucher Foundation Research Fellow at University College London. He delivered a talk on "The Connectivity of Finite Random Geometric Graphs" during his visit at ITCSC.

 

Invited Lecture by Prof. Ishfaq Ahmad

Prof. Ishfaq Ahmand delivered a talk on " Power-Aware High-Performance Computing: The Dawn of the Green Computing Era" at ITCSC on May 27, 2008. Prof. Ahmad is currently a professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). He is known for his research contributions in parallel and distributed computing, grid computing, multimedia computing, video compression, and security.

 

CUHK - Tsinghua Student Workshop on Theoretical Computer Science on May 23, 2008

CUHK-Tsinghua Student Workshop joinly organized by ITCSC, Computer Science and Engineering Department, CUHK and ITCS, Tsinghua University. 7 Tsinghua undergraduate students and 6 CUHK MPhil students presented their latest research project in the workshop. The main purpose of the workshop is to foster collaboration on research in theoretical computer science between students from the Chinese Unviersity of Hong Kong and Tsinghua University. It will be a stimulating forum for students from both universities to discuss their research activities, share their experiences, and enhance their knowledge.

Invited Lecture by Prof. Torsten Suel

Prof. Torsten Suel is a Principal Research Scientist at Yahoo! Research, and an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer and Information Science at Polytechnic University in Brooklyn, NY. He gave a talk on "Query Processing in Web Search Engines: Techniques and Challenges " at ITCSC on April 30, 2008.

 

Visiting Lecture by Dr. Pranab Sen

Dr. Pranab Sen, Reader, School of Technology and Computer Science, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, delivered talk on "Making classical zero knowledge protocols secure against quantum attacks" during visiting ITCSC from April 22 - 30, 2008

 

ITCSC Invited Lecture

Dr. Radia Perlma, Sun Fellow, Sun Microsystems Inc., delivered talks on "Data: Making it be there when you want it and go away when you want it gone" and " Routing in large networks despite Byzantine failures" during visiting ITCSC on April.

Dr. Radia Perlman invented many of the basic algorithms that make today's network infrastructure robust and scalable. She is author of "Interconnections: Bridges, Routers, Switches, and Internetworking Protocols", and coauthor of "Network Security: Private Communication in a Public World", which are widely used both as textbooks in universities and for engineers to learn the field. Recently, she was given a lifetime achievement award by Usenix, and named SVIPLA (Silicon Valley Intellectual Property Law Association) Inventor of the year.

ITCSC Theory Afternoon

Prof. Luca Trevisan , Professor, University of Califronia, Berkeley, visiting ITCSC and giving a talk on Sublinear Time Algorithms at ITCSC Theory Afternoon on January 15, 2008.

 

Dr. Andrej Bogdanov, Postdoctoral Researcher, Institute of Theoretical Computer Science, Tsinghua University, Bejing, China. Dr. Bogdanov giving a talk on Average-case Hardness for Errorless Heuristics at Theory Afternoon.

 

 

ITCSC Winter School 2008

ITCSC organized a Winter School on Jan 21-26, 2008 to promote collaboration and exchange with regional universities in theoretical computer science and communications.

Professor Peter Yum (right), Dean of Engineering Faculty, CUHK gave an openning speech at the first day of Winter School.

 

74 talented students were invited from universities in Hong Kong, Mainland, Taiwan and India.

World-class scholar Professor Bruce Hajek from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign was invited to give a talk to students on "Equilibrium in Allocation Games and What it " at the first day of Winter School.

 

Lectures were given by Prof. Andrew Yao, the winner of the prestigious A.M. Turing Award (2000) and other notable professors from various departments of the Faculty of Engineering, such as Prof. Duan Li (on the left picture), Chairman of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management Department, CUHK.

The buffet dinner was delicious. You could tell from the smiles as the crowds fanned out from the banquet.

ITCSC Invited Seminar

Chair Professor Xiaotie Deng, Department of Computer Science, City University of Hong Kong, visiting ITCSC and giving a talk on Interplays of Computer Science and Economics on Nov 21, 2007.

Professor Xiao-tie Deng received his Ph.D. at Stanford University in1989. In 1997, he joined City University of Hong Kong and now he is a Chair Professor. The research interests of Professor Deng include Algorithmic Game Theory, Internet Economics, Online Computing, and Combinatorial Optimization. He is also interested in related application problems, especially those associated with the Internet.
